Maysles Documentary Center (MDC) is seeking a passionate and skilled part-time Communications Manager to join our team!

MDC is a Harlem-based nonprofit organization committed to community, education, and documentary film. We use filmmaking to amplify and expand under-represented artists and narratives, while empowering young filmmakers in creative self-expression, communicating ideas, and advocating needs, through an ecosystem of educational opportunities, documentary programming, mentorship, filmmaking, and critical dialogue in advancement of social, racial, and economic justice. As the Communications Manager will work closely with our small team, we are looking for someone who is passionate about these ideas and excited by the prospect of articulating and sharing our vision with the public.

The Communications Manager oversees all public-facing representations of Maysles including: website, social media, newsletters, print promotions, and member communications. They engage and build relationships with press and affiliated organizations to broaden and deepen the reach of our film programming, education classes for Harlem youth and justice-involved young people, and overall mission. This person has the option to work with a Cinema Intern to oversee and maintain our digital archives, which include photos, videos, posters and promotional materials and often reflect unique or rare moments in film exhibition. On occasion, they also work with our team to craft messaging for larger communications campaigns related to fundraising, cultivation, fiscal sponsorship, or otherwise.

We are looking for someone with a thorough understanding of social media platforms, strong writing skills, and ability to further develop the MDC brand and digital presence. This person should be knowledgeable of existing film-specific media outlets and micro-cinema exhibition.

Qualifications:

•Three to five years of professional experience in communications/
marketing for a non-profit organization or company.

•Demonstrated social media platform management fluency, including
community building, analytics, and engaging campaign strategies.

•Knowledge of scheduling platform Hootsuite.

•Excellent communication (oral and written) and skills, including the ability to effectively communicate, establish relationships, and work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies.

•Time management skills as well as the ability to work independently and with a team.


Required and Preferred skills include:

•Skills in web design (required)

•Video editing (preferred)

•Graphic design (i.e. use of Canva or Adobe Photoshop) (required)

•Experience with Newsletter and Email Marketing (preferred)

We are looking for NYC-based applicants, as we have a hybrid work schedule. Preferably, this person also has knowledge of Harlem and/or a connection to the local community.

This is a part-time position (15–20 hours/week) with a starting salary of $30,000.
